MPLS TE Overview


MPLS Traffic Engineering can be used to spread the traffic load in a more controlled methods.


  • MPLS Traffic Engineering is used to allow routers to build paths not using shortest path of IP destination. With TE you can specify which routers to include in the path, which to exclude or explicitly define a path hop by hop.
  • MPLS Traffic Engineering occurs for the loopback addresses of PE routers.
  • RSVP protocol extensions are used to distribute the MPLS Labels. LDP is not required.
