MPLS Terminalogy
Introduction
MPLS is full of acronyms. This page has some of the MPLS acronyms used withing the wiki.kemot-net.com.
Terminology
- LER
- Label Edge Router - Edge devices that's either pushing or untagging a MPLS label.
- LSR
- Label Switching Router - Any router performing switching or swapping of MPLS labels.
- P
- Provider router - backbone routers which only switch/swap MPLS frames.
- LSP
- Label Switched Path - a mesh of unidirectional tunnels.
- FEC
- Forwarding Equivalence Class
- LIB
- Label Information Base - table used to store local and remote label bindings.
- LFIB
- Label Forwarding Instance Base - table used for label forwarding.
- Downstream LSR
- Data Plane and packet forwarding is downstream to a prefix's locations. It flows from upstream to downstream.
- Upstream LSR
- Control Plane and label distribution is upstream from a prefix. Label advertisement flows downstream to upstream.
