Introduction

Traceroute for IP forwarding is not able to detect all MPLS forwarding issues. MPLS Traceroute will only operate on MPLS LSP, if an LSP is broken this utility will detect it.

• Traceroute - when a probe packet expires using traceroute, the P routers might not have a route to the src of the probe. The P router generates an ICMP message, but sends it the destination router hoping that it will have the correct routing table to lookup the IP to label of the src of probes. Normally the in IP routing the core router would send ICMP back to the host directly.
